I have not heard of X2M Connect. Who are they?
X2M Connect are an experienced Australian technology company, headquartered in Melbourne and listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX: X2M). The company currently has more than half a million devices connected to its platforms, serving more than 80 customers across multiple countries.
I have not heard of 1Komma5. Who are they?
1Komma5 is a global renewable energy company that entered the Australian market in 2022 backed by a billion dollar German parent. The company offers solar systems, battery storage, energy efficient air conditioning and smart energy management systems.
Why is it important to think about my home and its energy approach?
The electricity system across Australia is transitioning towards more renewable energy sources to help combat the impacts of closing our coal fired power plants. Renewable energy sources such as solar are ways to help with the transition and lower your carbon footprint, and when combined with technology like home energy management systems can help maximise the use of solar in your home.
Why do I need more solar? My builder is already installing solar on my roof?
Every new home built in Victoria must ensure it adheres to the National Construction Code. New NCC requirements make it necessary to install solar on most new homes for it to pass the energy usage / efficiency metrics in the NCC and actually commence the build.
Most builders will install only what is required for your home to pass these NCC requirements, not actually design and implement a solar system that your home actually needs.. This is specifically where X2M Smart Energy and our solar partner, 1Komma5 can help.
How much does X2M Smart Energy cost?
The answer to this question will depend on the type and size of home that 1Komma5 need to install the panels on and the final size of your solar system.
What is a Home Energy Management System (HEMS)
A Home Energy Management System (HEMS) is a technology (about the size of an internet modem) that connects to the internet to monitor and control energy consumption within a home, allowing users to track usage, manage appliances, and potentially reduce energy costs.
How does X2M Smart Energy help me save ?
X2M Smart Energy derives its energy savings from 3 key sources:
- Installing the right sized solar system for your home, its location and appliances.
Solar panels save you money by generating your own electricity, reducing your reliance on the grid during the day. Making sure your system is large enough for your energy needs is crucial.
- Your excess solar can be stored in the community battery (if available in your estate).
This gives the battery operators the ability to decide how to best use the energy in the battery to provide benefits to X2MSE customers in the form of an annual credit (if the battery is fitted).
- The Home Energy Management Software installed in your home.
The software installed in your home can talk to the solar system and compatible appliances in your home and divert the energy produced by the panels to pre-heat your water or help pre-cool your home during the day, reducing your need for grid electricity at night time.
Finally, eligible Smart Energy customers may also be able to benefit from access to estate specific interest rates from the NAB. These could provide substantial savings depending on your loan. X2MSE customers are also eligible for discounts on appliances such as hot water systems that are compatible with the HEMS.
How much can X2M Smart Energy save me?
For a standard home and relative to a regular builder solar inclusion, we estimate X2M Smart Energy will save you over $900 more per annum in energy usage costs.
- Solar saving: We estimate, comparing the savings of a standard builder’s inclusion solar system to the savings from an X2MSE solar system to be approximately $800 more per year, based on like for like solar panels and inverters.
- Community Battery Benefit: If you estate has community batteries, you will receive an annual payment of $75 just by being a X2MSE customer and having your solar connected to the community battery.
- HEMS re-diversions for Hot Water and Air Conditioner : If you select compatible appliances for your home, we estimate the HEMS system will save you approximately $100 per annum in energy costs.
That’s nearly $1000 in savings in energy alone.
Finally, eligible Smart Energy customers may also be able to benefit from estate specific interest rates from the NAB. These could provide substantial savings depending on your loan. X2MSE customers are also eligible for discounts on select Hot Water Appliances from Solarhart / Rheem.
Am I restricted on who can provide my energy to my home? I don’t want to be told who I should use for my energy retailer?
No, you are free to choose your electricity retailer.
I already have finance for my land and home I don’t want to discuss anything with the NAB.
No problem. It is not compulsory to take finance with the NAB to be a X2M Smart Energy customer. Having access to their discounted offer is one of the possible additional benefits of being a X2M Smart Energy customer.

What should I choose?
We believe participating in X2M Smart Energy is the simplest, easiest and most effective way for you to install the right amount of solar for your home and start to enjoy the energy usage savings and build a more sustainable, energy efficient home.
Does joining X2M Smart Energy limit my builder choices?
No. But your builder will need to work with 1Komma5 to install your solar and HEMS.
Can I tell 1Komma5 where I want to put my solar?
You may make suggestions, but your builder will work with our solar partner to determine the best roof space for your solar to be installed and the angle of the panels to maximise their energy generation based on the design, materials and orientation of your home on the Estate.
How much space will the solar and other equipment take up?
A 5kW sized solar system is normally around 12-16 panels depending on the wattage of each panel. A 400W panel means you will need 12 or 13 panels and will take up approximately 20-30 square metres on your roof
* If you have compatible applicances, we will use surplus solar generated from your panels to pre-heat your water and / or pre-cool your home to maximise the effectiveness of your solar energy and help you save more energy costs
How quickly will my solar panels pay back? How do I know it is a good investment for my new home?
How quickly a solar system pays for itself depends on a number of factors, like the size of the system, the size of your home and the appliances you have and how you use your energy during the day. Generally, a 5kW system will be saving you around $800 per year*.
This does not include any additional benefits of participating X2M Smart Energy customers, like additional HEMS, Community Battery or any other potential interest savings with the NAB.
*Assumes home consuming 15kWh/day in summer and 20kWh/day in winter months. Generation of 3.6kWh per 1kW of Solar. Flat rate tariff of $0.30 inc GST. Feed in Tariff of $0.052. Solar self-consumption from 25% (lower savings figure) to 75% (higher savings figure). No export limitations
Is this safe? How is the quality of the work guaranteed?
All the elements of the solution – the solar panels, the inverters, the community battery (if fitted) and the HEMS software installed in the home are all compliant with Australian Standards and all come with their own equipment and installation warranty.
Do I need to pay upfront?
If you are building a new home, you will pay for X2M Smart Energy through your builder when they are building your home. Your new home is typically paid in phases, based on completed stages.
If you are installing X2M Smart Energy after your home is already built, you will pay for it when your solar installation is completed, via our solar partner 1Komma5.
Can I install my own battery? Can I install an EV charger?
Yes – just ensure the solar inverter and HEMS is compatible with your battery and EV charger. Our solar partners are able to help with this.
What if I change my mind and don’t want to be a Smart Energy customer anymore?
You are free to leave X2M Smart Energy at any time without penalty. Your HEMS will stop operating and you could lose the additional plan benefits if you leave the scheme.
I have already built my home in my Estate, am I able to connect X2M Smart Energy?
Yes, you are able to connect to X2M Smart Energy and enjoy the potential energy savings driven by the solar and HEMS bundle. Owners of existing homes (or homes that have been designed but construction is yet to commence) may be contacted by X2M Smart Energy separately to customers just buying new blocks of land. Community Battery FAQs
What is a community battery?
A community battery is an energy storage system installed in a central location within the community – like a park – and stores excess electricity generated from solar during the day.
When there is surplus renewable energy available, the battery stores it. Then, during periods of peak energy demand or when renewable sources aren’t producing, this energy can be supplied back to the community via the grid.
Depending on your estate, community batteries may be part of the offer subject to council approval or may not form part of the X2M Smart Energy offer.
What are the benefits of a Community Battery?
A community battery (if fitted) helps reduce energy costs and lowers your reliance on the grid. It helps maximise the use of solar energy by storing it. They can assist with improving network resilience as a supporting power source leaving the neighbourhood less vulnerable to blackouts and help support a greener, more sustainable energy future.
X2M Smart Energy customers will receive an annual payment from the Community Battery (if fitted in your estate) as an additional benefit of the proposition.
Does the community battery offer blackout protection?
No, the community battery will not keep the Estate electricity ‘alive’ during a regional blackout. The community battery will help Powercor (the energy distributor of the estate ) to avoid blackouts.
Who owns and maintains the Community Battery?
GreenRock Energy Australia (our Community Battery owner and operator) takes full ownership and responsibility for maintaining the community battery in the estate.
How do I connect to the community battery (if it is fitted)?
As a X2M Smart Energy customer, your solar / inverter system will be automatically connected to the community battery through the normal grid.
